Spike announced a new PSP RPG with a bizarre theme - Conception: Please Deliver my Child, from the developer of Dangan-ronpa. The game is an academy love simulation RPG, the protagonist Itsuki Yumi is a guy with a rare fate, he will date one of the twelve witch girls at the academy and have a baby with her - the baby will have the power to "save the world".
I just had to make this thread. This almost made me laugh.
I'm not sure what surprises me the most, the fact that Spike doesn't mind making RPGs or the fact that Spike actually makes this... game?

Not a fan of RPGs & I don't know much about the typical development procedure of that genre.
Care to educate me uncle Kokos?

Um, Spike's the publisher not the developer.

Sorry, I don't think I can. Game development is not my thing.
But it's fair to assume that the development process of an RPG depends on the approach (linear versus open world and story-driven versus more about the gameplay for example). Eastern RPGs tend to be linear and story-driven.
Also, since Eastern RPGs mostly are and feel like action adventure games but more in-depth in most aspects, I suppose it wouldn't be that much different from a full-fledged action adventure game.

But why isn't there a developer announced? Perhaps Spike is both the publisher and developer at the same time.

Ah I see. There was one JRPG I really loved & still play from time to time. Seiken Densetsu 3. Can play with a friend & I like that I can control most of my offense & defense. It also had some really fun characters like Kevin the werewolf & its class change system was very intricate. One of the first games to make me think about team Synergy.

I guess you're playing on an emulator? I don't think that game came out in the West?
Speaking of the Mana series, they don't make many multiplayer RPGs anymore I think. Recently Lord of The Rings: War in The North came out, which is a co-op RPG but not really like Mana, two different things really. Still, I've heard it's good if you like those kind of games.

While I would actually like if the ventured into this for Project Age 2012, I'd have no idea how the heck they'd do it considering DBZ's RPG-unfriendly storyline.

It has been done before. The Legacy of Goku trilogy did great (bar the first one) and there's also Attack of The Saiyans.
It's true that there will probably be sacrifices in authenticity but we will also gain more in the process when you think about it, stuff that has little to no place in the fighting games like Snake Way, the training on King Kai's Planet, searching for Dragon Balls etc. can be covered better in other genres and these events are still important to the storyline.
Besides I wouldn't mind if fanservice and authenticity take a backseat for the sake of improving other significant elements.
Now, how Spike would do this if they could, I have no idea. Maybe this weird game will show us if Spike is the developer. I'm not going to follow it though, it will probably go in obscurity anyway, never to be heard about in the West again.

RPG games are here mainly because of the story, so I don't have a problem with it xD
Grandia, Golden Sun, FFX and some others are my favorite ones...
But Spike and RPGs??? Weird world xD

All I can say is that if there is a DBZ rpg, I'm going to skip it...
I do not have interest in the slow moving 'combat' of an rpg for a series that is known for over the top, intense, highspeed action.

There is a difference between a handheld and a console RPG though IMO. While they could make ice wolves enemies in that game and I felt okay, I wouldn't feel the same in a console.
Oh, and Zienzo, an RPG does not need to have slow paced fighting. Look at Darksiders, for instance.

@Kokos - Yup, Snes9x FTW. Also Legacy of Goku is mad solid. I really enjoyed it. I like control. As long as its fun & the enemies are somewhat interesting. I can play it for hours(which I did). I wouldn't mind a home console Legacy of DB(not Goku because he's Cena levels of glory hog IMO). Action adventure or action RPG is good enough.
As long as I get to blast crocodiles/alligators & various lifeforms into oblivion with a big bang attack. I am happy. Cp-op Shaolin Monks style would be even more fun. Its always 10x more fun kicking ass with a buddy.
@Zien - I feel you. If its at all turn based, **** that. I'm ghost.

Okay, we should clarify what everyone means when the say "RPG." People throw that term around without actually thinking about how it's used. Darksiders, RPG. Fable, RPG. Pokemon, RPG. Final Fantasy, RPG. Do you see the problem?
If it's turn based, I'm out.
If it's an action/adventure game, it depends... I like my large scale fights to be very large scale. The issue with this is that the story for DBZ does not work for an RPG. That's why I'm so hesitant. I'd welcome an original story like what hero mode in Ultimate Tenkaichi has, but not the actual story from the manga.
Western RPGS are normally real time and Eastern are turn-based.

DBZ large scale is still a problem due to limitation system wise. However it could be pretty well done. Maybe something Dynasty warriors style. & I agree I despise turn based combat. Seiken Densetsu didn't me through that crap nor did Legacy of Goku.
That's the one main turn off between myself & RPGs. A battle does not work that way at all & its not good method IMHO.

There are only a handful of turn based that I can stand; [some] Final Fantasy and Pokemon. There are a few misc titles in there as well but other than few I mentioned, I can't stand it.

100% agreed. Anything GOW style, DMC or Shaolin Monk styled would be good. Fun & intense.

Is Shaolin Monks an rpg? I loved playing that game when I was younger with my friend... Though I wish it had more characters than just the four that were there... or had more than two at the start.

Its an action adventure but yeah I enjoyed even when I was 17. Great game. I think Boon said he's thinking of making a sequel, if they do NRS can take my MONAIZ.
I should hit him up on twitter.

I know how much midway loves to remake their MK games. I wonder what a Shaolin Monks based on the alternate story in MK9 would be like.

After doing some research, Spike is the developer. As for the whole turn-based issue, it's impossible to capture the fast pace of DBZ fights with 100% manual gameplay, so a turn-based approach wouldn't be a nice idea.

If we're all up in each other's ish about having a bunch of QTE's, I think you know how much a lot of us will complain if all of a sudden it becomes turn based.
You can make a decent combo engine that has brutal combos inside it. While there could be some button combinations for unleashing special attacks, turn based would be a bit much IMO.

You're not. I just believe that there really hasn't been a turn based game that has captured the essence of some dragonball concepts, while I see some real time action games that have taken these concepts a bit further

There has actually been a turnbased dbz rpg on the GBA, forgot the name though.

And real-time action games only take those concepts so far.

I know, but it really depends on what you wish. Are you willing to sacrifice a bit of over-the-topness so you can control it, or are you into the turn-based RPG method? I'm just thinking that when it comes to Dragonball, if most of the essence can be captured, I'd sacrifice having all of it being captured if I could control what was going on.

Uh, you still have control in a turn-based game.

I would rather have full control of my character even if my attacks may have a cycle, and takes time to go through and/or perform. (DAO, SWKotor 1&2, NWN1&2)
What i don't want is pressing on screen button prompts that launches an entire string of attacks that i very well could do manually.
